The Nordic & Baltic C&I Energy Market

Nord Pool context, country profiles, and why solar + storage economics work in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Finland.

// Nord Pool Overview

Europe's largest integrated power market.

Architecture ready for expansion

Nord Pool operates day-ahead (Elspot) and intraday (Elbas) markets across the Nordic and Baltic regions. Prices clear separately per bidding zone — EE, LV, LT, and FI are the four zones modelled in EnTrans Nordic.

Since October 2025, Elspot trades at 15-minute intervals (96 slots/day), providing finer-grained price signals for battery dispatch optimisation. EnTrans Nordic uses hourly aggregates via the Elering API.

// Country Profiles

Four markets. One tool.

🇪🇪

Estonia

Elektrilevi~90% market share
  • ~700 MW solar installed, rapid C&I growth
  • Investment aid for renewable energy projects
  • EE bidding zone — low-cost hours common in spring/autumn
  • Low labour costs relative to Western Europe
🇱🇻

Latvia

Sadales tīklsPrimary DSO
  • Growing solar market, net billing for prosumers
  • EU Green Deal driving C&I investment
  • LV bidding zone — strongly correlated with EE
  • Net billing: self-consumption revenue is the primary driver
🇱🇹

Lithuania

ESOEnergijos skirstymo operatorius
  • Largest Baltic solar market by installed capacity
  • Active prosumer scheme for self-consumers
  • LT bidding zone — occasionally diverges from EE/LV
  • Balancing market participation well-established
🇫🇮

Finland

Caruna / HelenMultiple DSOs
  • Mature market, high electricity consumption
  • Excellent wind resource alongside solar
  • Energy aid programme for renewable investments
  • FI zone — can diverge significantly due to hydro and nuclear

// Why Solar + Storage Here

Price volatility creates the opportunity.

Nord Pool price volatility = real arbitrage value

Day-ahead Elspot prices vary by factor 10x or more within a week. Battery storage captures this spread as wholesale arbitrage revenue.

📊

Balancing revenue stacks on self-consumption

FCR, aFRR, and mFRR ancillary services provide capacity payments on top of energy savings. EnTrans Nordic models all three products.

🌱

Guarantees of Origin provide additional revenue

GoO certificates for renewable generation can be sold separately, providing an additional revenue stream on top of energy value.

📋

EU regulatory push for self-consumption

All four countries are implementing EU Electricity Directive provisions promoting prosumers and behind-the-meter generation.
